Today, January 6th, is Christmas Eve for Orthodox Christians celebrating Christmas on January 7th.
For Serbs, this day is called “Badnji Dan” or the day of the badnjak. The day is filled with a lot of interesting customs and traditions coated with a thin veneer of Christian theological explanation, but which really have their roots in the pre-Christian Slavic religion which was largely animistic. The fact that most of these still survive today is pretty amazing in and of itself and as different from the commercialism of the Xmas(TM) season as you can get.
You can read more about it here.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackback…oh, how I’d love to be a fly on the wall; sitting back and observing all this rich culture. This fly of course would be equiped with a teeny, tiny writing pad, pen and a plate and fork….
Merry Christmas!
